Category C insurance writeoff

Interesting that this is happening, it would seem, regularly.
They value your smashed up car at nearly £6000. I would suggest that is bang out of order. If the car is worth £8400 in perfect condition then it's worth £6000 tops as a Cat-D, and that is when it's fixed (and in all probability will be worth much less than that). I'm assuming that they are not going to fix it before returning it to you?
They owe you £8400 and it is not in your interests to accept anything less. Bully for them if they don't accept salvage -- that's what we pay them for. They can't have their cake and eat it.0 -
This has just happen to me too , Zurich want to write my car off (a bmw 330d) . They have valued it at 8.4 but want to send me a cheque - 2.7 and the car back .
I have said i dont want a cat d car and could they just send me the full amount .They said no they dont do that as they dont deal with salvage !?!
is this right ? dont they have to own my car to cat d it?
if i do decide to keep and repair can anyone suggest an insurance company as mine (swift) just told me they dont insure cat d cars .
thanks in advance..
They can't force you to have the salvage, and they can't arbitrarily set a value on it.
Insist on the full value or you could offer them £250 to take it off their hands.0 -

sorry i didnt get that across right, they are sending me a cheque for 8.4 minus 2.7 (value of car)
so im getting 5.7 plus the car backInsist on the full value or you could offer them £250 to take it off their hands.
i like the sound of that0 -
Ah well, at £2.7K there might, just might, be room for manouvre here.
It depends on how broken the car is. If it's worth say £6000 patched up, and you know a friend of a friend who can sort it out for say 2 grand, then making a silly offer to the insurance company might just work.
If you could get the car for maybe £1000 or £1500, and get it fixed for £2k, then you're in profit. Then you just sell the car, get £5-6K for it maybe, and move on.
An awful lot of suppositions there, but you might be able to work out a tidy profit for not much work potentially.0 -
ive just been offered 3k for the car by a mate , so looks like im quids in already0

I'd still try to bargain, if that was their first offer.
Offer 1.8K back.0 -
One thing that might be worth doing, ring around a few local scrapyards and ask them how much they'd give you for the car. Bear in mind that they will need to collect it from wherever your insurance company is storing it.
Use those quotes when making your counter offer to the insurance company.
Chances are you'll be quoted 50 quid at best.0
