in Credit cards
Ive applied for a few credit cards without success as my credit rating isnt great. The reason i want to apply is that I will be going abroad soon and would be hand if I needed to hire a car etc
I applied for tescos, sainsburys and the current bank im with Santander.
I have no financial difficulties at present and am currently paying my mobile bill through direct debit.
I did apply for a credit rating through equifax and my rating is fair.
However it shows that I have been defaulted with Carphone warehouse when i use to have a contract with them.
It shows 4 late payments in sept 2008, oct 2008 defaulted and Nov 2008 settled. This was due to carphone warehouse issuing the wrong bill amount which i refused to pay. Eventually they sorted the problem.
Now obviously i cant get a credit card because of this...
Can someone help with this. Thanks

You can either dispute your credit with Equifax and TransUnion or even better would be to get a prepaid credit card and start fixing your credit. I've seen cards that you can get started with for as low as $75 but unfortunately I don't have a link for you.0

Because of your defaults you need to look at applying for a subprime card - have a read of this article - http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cards/bad-credit-credit-cards
The APRs are high and the limits low but it will get you back using credit.
If you want to dispute the default then you'll need to go back to carphone warehouse to ask them to remove it. If you've got copies of the correspondance and they can see it was their error which they later corrected you stood stand a reasonable chance of getting it removed. But that said it could take a few months so I would still try getting a sub-prime card in the meantime.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -

Debit cards and car hire dont really mix for most mainstream car hire places.0

I suppose it depends on where you are and how you book. I booked a car in the USA some years back and they didn't require a credit card be used. I simply had to show my booking number and my driving licence at collection. I think they had some small print about showing you passport but I wasn't asked to do that.
I've used my debit card a lot the last couple of times abroad and it's never been a problem, OP0
