Mijas Costa (Malaga)

We are going away next month to riviera del sol, Mijas Costa,(between benelamadena and fuengirola) - flying into malaga. How easy is train transfers from the airport:confused: and also, what are the things to do in the area?

  • From what i recall, its a bit of a nightmare getting to Mijas Costa as the area has no train station.
We had to get a train from outside Malaga airport along the coast to Fuengirola, walk around the corner to the extremely crowded bus-stop, get a bus to Mijas, then a taxi to our hotel.
Mijas is quiet, very residential, lots of Brits and Brit estate agents, but a nice area. Good bus links to Marbella which is worth a visit, Puerto Banus is too, and Estepona which is beautiful.

Ahh MC is not to be confused with Mijas. I recall driving through MC when going to Fuengirola. There are some larger retail park type shops there, i think it is a place between 2 resorts. However its on the N370 main route to Gibralta, Marbella, Puerto Banus.

If you fancy going to Mijas itself, which is up in the mountains, its well worth a visit. Carry on up in the hills and you reach Eldorado.

I would recommend a car hire for Costa Del Sol if you fancy driving. Dont go to Algeciras (its an arabic area which has high prostitution and drug abuse, besides there is nought there!)

If heading along the main N370 road towards Gibralta, yoy may see a sign for Cabopino. This has some nice restaurants, beach and a few shops. Good for a stop (also this is where the Eldorado marina was located for all you ex fans)

Dont be put off Mijas Costa, you are a car ride from good places!

Hi ,I go to costa del sol a lot,not sure just where you are going there are a few stations after torremolinos but before Fuengirola, feel you could do with a car. I hire here ,then pay there its very cheap to do ,and the drivings not bad at all ,you can then get to some nice places from there,Marbella, ben Havis, Malaga for a day is nice ,it has a port and Cathedral.

I have stayed in Fuengirola, Benalmedena, and Estapona along this coast. But you really should hire a little car if you can. Hiring at the airport is easy and cheap and if you can just take a deep breath and flow with the traffic and dont panic if you miss a turning then you'll be fine.

The architecture of almost all the tourist development along this coast is of course absolutely awful, but I love southern Spain nonetheless! So I am sure you are not going only to get to and from the airport and then to just admire the four walls you booked, a bit of extra sun, and an occasional view of what you see on the bus/train route into or out of Malaga!

But if you really are stuck with public transport only, it might not be all bad news. I have just zoomed in on Malaga to Benalmedena on Google Earth. Some sort of railway IS shown coming out of Malaga main station, skirting the airport, and broadly following the coast at least as far as Fuengirola!
(which might be far enough unless you are booked at one of the places that stretches the 'Mijas' address too far south like 'Mijas Golf'!)

Actually, if you search Google for fuengirola train you get some very optimistic results! One says "You can travel by train from Málaga Airport as far as Fuengirola. You can almost set your watch by the time table ... "

Another says you can get a bus from Fuengirola station to Marbella.

Have you got a full address in Mijas Costa? Put your street name into https://www.viamichelin.com and then cross-refer the map it gives you with Google Earth. You can then begin to plan it down to the last footstep - the detail in Google Earth is amazing - if you switch on the entries added by the Google Earth Community, you can see particular restaurants marked as well as the main tourist sights. I can even see a rock I clipped with my back bumper in a car park! And no, it wasn't the Rock of Gibraltar!
