Replacing a Thermocouple (Gas fire)

My gas fire cuts off after approx an hour (sometimes a bit longer or a little bit less)

Ive been told we need to replace the thermocouple.

How much should I be expecting to pay for this job?

This is the fire & the thermocouple

I dont know if its relevant or not, but instead of a reddish/orangy flame, we seem to be getting a bluer flame which doesnt appear to give as much heat.

    Thanks

Faulty thermocouple would usually just not let the pilot stay alight when you release the knob.

Your fault doesn't sound like a thermocouple problem from here.

    Fire lights up OK.

Works for usually an hour (sometimes longer) & then cuts off.

Online guides say the theromocouple might need a clean with some of that compressed spray air; a BG engineer wh o serviced my boiler says its probably the thermocouple needing replacing

    Really quite confused

I would advise getting the fire serviced. Make sure the flue and ventilation are checked properly. It could be that the fire has an oxygen sensing device built into the thermocouple unit, so if the ait gets rarified then the thermocouple cuts out due to lack of oxygen.

Could also be a simple pilot injector partial blockage.

The last time I had a customer say that BG had said they needed new parts for their fire, all it needed was a service and 'treating' with my air compressor.

About an hour for labour and around £10 max for a bog standard universal thermocouple if the engineer is honest with you.

At work we buy the thermocouples in for just over a pound so don't let them rip you off.

The fire should be serviced annually, if it isn't get it done.
