Santander (Asda CC) lost my payment!!

I opened an Asda Credit Card before Xmas just to use for online shopping. I always pay my balance in full and set up a direct debit during the online application. When the account was finally up and running I checked the DD and found that they had changed it to only make the minimum payment! I changed it to full amount, confirmed and thought no more about it.

The day after my payment was due I checked to make sure it had gone and to my surprise no payment had been taken and there was no evidence of the DD even being set up!

I waited a couple of days to make sure no payment was taken and then posted a cheque for the full amount.

I received a phone call a few days later telling me my account was in arrears and I needed to pay. I explained what had happened and was assured me that a note would be put on the account and that there would be NO late payment fee charged.

Yesterday I received a copy statement and Notice of Default with a £12 charge! My bank statement shows that they cleared my cheque a week ago!!

After 25 mins on hold I finally spoke to someone in the credit department who has now opened a missing payment query, made a note on my account and told me to wait 28 days for a reply.
I'm worried that they will continue to charge me on the account and affect my credit rating. Is there something else I can do to protect myself while I wait to hear from them?

I would really appreciate some advice because I'm really starting to worry now :(
