Hi, I just looked on the IRS website. It says, "Generally, if a taxpayer is due a refund for withholding or estimated taxes paid, it must be claimed within 3 years of the return due date or risk losing the right to it." So whether your employment was legal or not, the time for claiming it has, unfortunately, passed.
However, I don't think you need to have any fears if the possibility of working here (I'm USAmerican) ever comes up again. In fact, you will probably want the credit with our Social Security system as it only requires 40 quarters (10 years) of employment to qualify for the old age pension. If you worked five years, you are already halfway there. Even part-time work during a quarter gets you the full credit.
Also, there are some reciprocal agreements between the US and UK regarding Social Security. I noticed that when I was helping my elderly friend from Mexico figure out how to claim the Social Security pension she was entitled to even though she personally had never worked or lived here. (Her DH had become a US citizen, while she continued living in Mexico and did not become a US citizen.) Anyway, I did not read about the agreements with other countries, but if you would like, I would be happy to see if I can find the info again.0 -
Hobo17, if your taxes are straight forward you should be able to download HR Block's software and do your own. It's great software and you could email them to see if it would be good for your situation. Think it costs about 40 bucks.
Thanks - we will definitely be doing that next year but as we only moved over in August we paid part of a year of UK and part of a year of US taxes and I don't want to screw it up and land us with a bill!0
