I've got the manual version and its excellent. Is the automatic one the one that switches off the engine when stationary?

Excellent fuel consumption and not had any real problems yet, touch wood.

I had an 05 reg from brand new for 18 months or so.
The 110bhp vtr+ 3 door model was actually quite good for a newish French car, only did 18k miles in it so maybe would of had more issues if I had it longer??

All in all for me not a bad car for the time I had it although depreciation is horrendous on them so if you buy one be sure to get a real good deal.

Mines a 2002 model with 80,000 on the clock of which I have done 35,000 of them in two years.

The automatic stop/start engine version I believe was plagued with problems that may/may not be sorted by now.

We have a C$ (2006) VTR+ and its problem is that bulbs go all the time - so much more than normal! Very frustrating.

road tests and info at c4owners.org (yes I am a forum member of stated site). Have so far ran my C4 HDi (manual) from 80K up to 130K miles, no problems.

Seems that with all cars you get great ones and you get awful ones. You might get lucky you might not!
But people with lemons are the first to complain, so the number of satisfied owners is going to be huge.

Are you buying brand new? As the new model has only just come out, there may be teething issues that may mean several trips to the garage for warranty updates/repairs?

Well spotted. I missed the C4 bit. Thought he was talking about C3!
  • The car isn't bad at all, in manual form.

I assume when you say automatic, you mean the automated manual box known by various names mostly unprintable, which apparently you have yet to drive.

If for some reason it happens to have a proper torque converter auto box buy it and ignore the following.

Take a very long test drive, and include every single awkward situation you can think of and then a few more.
Plenty of tight manoeuvering preferably on an incline, lots of stop start heavy traffic simulation and creeping along, hill starts where you have to nose out gently at a blind junction, simulate slowing for roundabout or junction but go suddenly under power just like happens on busy roads to see if the box can cope or if it dumps you for several seconds in no mans land whilst it thinks about what gear it wants.
Sit your lovely lady in the passenger seat and floor the throttle and keep it floored up through the gears, see if she can cope with the jerky changes.

If you still want one after all that, it must be a good one.

This box goes in various PSA cars, worth searching a few Peugeot/Citroen forums for troubles (early clutch replacements etc).
