    BG still tried to take and RBS (my bank) charged me an unpaid item fee which I am going to get back from BG.

    That is the incorrect proceedure and your bank is in the wrong. If a direct debit is cancelled the bank should return the payment as mandate cancelled and not charge. If they returned payment and charged then the bank has made an error and should refund the charge. Its only if you didnt cancel the mandate at the bank that the bank can get away with doing that.
