  • I've spent much of the day reading through the posts and resources provided and was able to pass on this information to my parents a short while ago. Having these resources has alleviated a lot of stress for them and I think they now have a clearer idea of what to expect when the money arrives. As I said before, they don't have the mindset for extravagant or wasteful spending but it's reassuring to know that if there was a dispute they can show that they took care to research the law and abide by it. My Dad will also ask the benefit office for some in-depth advice when he informs them of their change in circumstances as the decisions on deprivation of capital seem to be very subjective.
If your father is on Disability Living Allowance could he not use the mobility part of his money and get a car from motability, all the maintenance of the vehicle is covered and the insurance?

Unfortunately, my Dad is unable to take part in this scheme as he only receives the lower rate for the DLA Mobility Component and they require the higher rate, but thanks for the suggestion.

Once again, thank you all for taking the time to help with our case. There have been so many helpful responses and we are really very grateful! :)
  • Hello there,

Rather, they have so far proposed to spend money on things like a car, which we couldn’t afford to replace when the last one stopped being roadworthy, and replacing their living room furniture which is years old and falling apart. As well as this, they would like to make some modest improvements to the kitchen, such as replacing the cooker and fridge freezer which are both old, damaged and probably won’t last much longer.

Lots of good advice on this thread. A quick thought - it wouldn't do any harm to take photos of items in their home which they plan to replace to show what poor condition they are in.

I for one would be very grateful if you could update us if your Dad makes these enquiries.

  • Greenmanalishi, the reason you see some threads here which appear to attack is because a lot of us *(myself included) having posted here for a period of time, have become cynical. Largely as a result of the many threads which are posted here, seeking ways not to legitimately claim but effectively defraud the system.

I'm going to hold my hands up.

I saw the title of this thread and thought For Pete's sake, not another 'how can buy what I want and still scrounge of the state without them stopping my money' threads. Threads we often see popping up here when people inherit a large sum and want to be greedy rather than needy.

It was refreshing to see that this is not the case here. We have a couple here in a vulnerable position who have not been able to afford to update items that a lot of people take for granted, owing to disability. People who want to buy the things they need (difference: need not want), within reason and legitimately so; who are seeking genuine advise to protect their interests without trying to scam the system or take the mickey out of it.

I'm sorry you have seen some cutting posts. Unfortunately such is the mentality on this forum a lot of the time - I'm no stranger to posting cutting remarks myself - though I like to think I've done so only where deserved, and usually when it appears to be the only language the questioner understands. I wasn't very judgemental before I came to MSE. The questions often asked here have led me to become that way, though!

I hope you have found some of the advice helpful and I wish your parents well.

Let this thread perhaps serve as a reminder to us cynics (again I include myself there, given my original judgement before I opened the thread), that not all posters are trying to worm their way around the system, some are perfectly genuine people just trying to get by and are floored by a comlpex benefits system which they cannot understand.

An excellent post - thank you.

I have been on MSE forums for years under a different name with thousands of posts offering help in an area in which I know/knew something. Now I have found myself in need of help, with this board, and regularly find myself cringing at some posters nasty remarks. And this has surprised me a great deal as it is not like other boards I visit.

Despite my current predicament I am thick skinned but I do worry about the fear of some who would like to post but daren't as they fear the nasty comments. Yes some are trying to work the system but my nature is to give the benefit of doubt unless proven otherwise.
