I've paid in £247 of 1p, 2p and 5p coins this week at my bank!

I bank with Natwest and there has never been a problem. They just say don't go during busy times (12-2) and don't turn up 5 mins before closing time!

Make sure you bag the coins up in the respective banks bags. They won't accept any other banks bag. Always take some spare coins in case you haven't added up the coins in the bag properly and need to top the bag up.

Oh....AVOID COINSTAR machines. They are a con. I tested one out at Sainsburys. I put £5 in 1p coins in (i know how much it was as i counted it before hand). It only registered as £4.36 on screen then it deducted its cut and left me with £4.02! Its a swizzle. In my case it was more like 20% it took instead of 7.9%.

    Thanks for the tips.

Nice to know I'm not the only one that gets excited about my change :)

    £247 of change is incredible!

I have a ton of bags, but they're all from different banks - I think I'll nip to HSBC and ask for some of their bags just to be on the safe side.

I've still got another giant bottle full of change to bag up! Its taken years to accumulate.

HSBC can be funny !!!!!!s about this though. Worth having a word with them before bagging it all up. Worst comes to the worst, just open a basic natwest account, pay all the money in, withdraw it and shut the account!
  • Hello and good evening all,i usually save up my change into a bean type can but rather than bin it after opening it i use a pringles plastic top,its almost the right size but i had to turn the lid so that it stayed put on the top of the can better than throwing out the can.

The can was bought for me for a birthday prezzie and on the side is a label asking for a computer upgrade contribution, but now has another new lease of life for my tanners (5 p coins )

If you have an account with a bank, they don't charge. Unless it's a business account.
Some, Halifax & Abbey will only take a limited number of bags of coins in a day per person. It seems to be those that were a building society that now want to play at being a bank that have limits.
If you have digital kitchen scales, that weigh in grams, it's a doddle to weigh the correct amount into each bag.
Just count out the coins once to the bag amount, then make a note of the weight.
    252g in 20p's is £10.00
    190g in £1 is £20.00

These are the two we weigh at work most days. Sometimes, it does fluctuate by about 1 or 2 grammes, I think some of the plastic bags weigh heavier than others.

    Have fun
