Where do you cash in your change / coins?

I have a big Bertie Basset money box which is my 'everything' tub - I stuff him with 1s 2s, 5s and the occasional 'big' coin (even a couple of £1s in there!) when I feel rich so that he will be a nice suprise to cash in.

He's getting full, so it won't be long before we bank him somewhere.... where would you do it? I used to take him to the corner shop - who were always desperate for change, but a bigger chain took over, and now they look at me like I'm a freak for asking them if they will change even a small amount...

Do banks charge for depositing change these days? I still have some bags lying around but I haven't tried to bank change for ages and I'm sure I read somewhere that they didn't like you doing it?

  • I take mine to coinstar theres one in my local asda, you could email and ask if theres one in your local branch :) They charge 7 pence in the pound to change though. You pour them in the machine and when the machine has finished counting the coins, it gives you a ticket stating how much you've changed, take this to information point and exchange for cash, or if your shopping there you can use it as a coupon at the end of your shop and reduce by the relevant ammount on your ticket.
  • if you sort it you can deposit/exchange it at bank or post office. coin tar machines charge 7.5% meaning you only get 92.5p for every pound.

  • I deposited over £80 in change at my local Barclays over the course of last month. No charge or hassle & if anything they seemed grateful & started distributing it along the other tills as I was leaving.

Banks dont charge for depositing change - and some of them will have machines like the coinstar but dont charge you I believe.

My Halifax account will only take 5 bags at a time, couple more if I get one of the nice assistants. Barlcays usually takes any. As long as I am paying them into an account. Local shop usually takes my £1, £2 and 50ps off me.

I count/sort them into the respective bank bags and deposit at the bank - it's free.

The use a weighing machine to check the content and it goes into my current account. I then do a one off transfer over the 'net to the cc.

I try and choose a time when it's quiet...not the last Saturday in the month when everyone is paying bills and there's a huge queue and harrassed staff working!

I pay mine into my NatWest account (not for much longer though!) and the 2 branches I use have never minded. They are always in bags of the correct amount so they just weigh them.

How much/many bags are you thinking it will be?

    Thanks for the responses.

I've used coinstar when I've been so skint that I need to raid the piggy bank to pay for shopping to last till payday, but now I'm paid weekly that doesn't happen any more, so I'd rather save those extra pennies!

Thanks for the advice about banks - I've no idea where I got the idea they charged from! I'll drop them in to hubbies basic account sometime during the week so that they can get put into the savings account after.

I have absolutely no idea how much there will be in there - he's probably about the volume of a typical Terramundi that you would buy from Collectibles - how much can they hold if you were just putting in generic change every shopping trip?

This is actually the first time he's ever been remotely close to full - I'm really excited to see how much he held... sad isn't it!
