Hi,
I know it is probably my naivety but if anyone does have any advice I'd be extremely grateful.
Background: I am due to submit my tax return today, and to do so I needed my bank statements from 09-10 in order to do so, my bank is Smile (Co-op) and therefore do online banking, I am only able to view my statements for the last 12 months therefore they say I need to order them if I wanted to see them. I then requested they sent me 4 statements.
I then logged on to my account today to see £40 has left my account due to this. I was shocked to see this, the fact the are able to charge £40 for 4 sheets of paper?!?
I am also yet to receive these statements which I requested a week ago. And will be no use to me now.
I am upset by this as I can't simply afford to lose £40 like this. I assume I wont be able to get this money back so hope it will act as a warning for anyone who didnt know the fees were so rediculous.
Thanks for reading,
Sarah

When I worked at a bank, I used to hate getting copy statement requests as they were so time consuming to get. Plus, it was monotonous as hell. So, what you see as 4 sheets of paper is just the end result. Not the whole process.I am upset by this as I can't simply afford to lose £40 like this. I assume I wont be able to get this money back so hope it will act as a warning for anyone who didnt know the fees were so rediculous.
You should have thought about that before requesting them. It's a bit late to do it after that event.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -

Did they tell you there was a charge when you requested them? If they didn't, ring up and complain. Did you ask them how long it would take?
Yes they can charge for it, as it takes up bank staff time printing your statements off. Not saying i agree or disagree, just stating a fact. It's something you should have considered before opening an online bank account.0 -

Most banks charge for duplicate statements nowadays.
Smile state that online statements are only available to view for 12 months. It suggests you print them off during that period.
