                    I'm confused
I want to buy some netting to protect my beans, fruit etc from being eating by the birdies (yes, I'm being premature, but want to purchase before I need it!). But the ones I've seen advertised as "to protect crops" seem to have really large holes, a bird could easily get a beak in and a pod or berry out.
What should I be looking for, and where?
Thanks!

Beans shouldn't need to be protected, soft fruit does, unless you operate like me, which is a basis that as long as they don't strip the bushes, I'm happy to share.
I know people use debris netting cheaply from ebay, or a local building site.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
The last time I looked (about 18 months ago)this was the cheapest option:-

but there may be better offers out there now.
Either that or schmooze up to a local scaffolding firm ;-)0 -

Ooh, I thought they liked beans. Am I thinking of peas?
I don't mind the birds having a peck, but the garden I'm in is a playground for LOADS of birds, all so friendly that they sit on a branch about a foot away, watching me doing the gardening!!0 -
can you not just use the cheap netting they sell in poundland?:xmastree:Is loving life right now,yes I am a soppy fool who believes in the simple things in life :xmastree:0

Hi, We've got on quite well with netting that is meant for covering ponds during the autumn when leaves are likely to fall in a pond.
You can buy this from Wilkinsons, Garden Centres, possibly supermarkets, I think I've seen it in Sainsburys, although not until after Easter.
You do need to net fruit as they will have that, also brassicas - cabbages, cauliflower, kale etc0 -

Put "Bird Netting" into the search box on EBay and there are good bargains there. I bought some last year to stop sparrows pecking the blossom off my runner beans. 2metres x 10 metres should do.0

I recently got 3 nets from a scaffolding after they built some flats near by. The nets were 90ft by 30ft. I didn't quite realise just how large they are. Needless to say I have given aload away after cutting it up. I now have enough to only cover my plot once with a bit to spare:).
Scaffolders are happy to part with old netting just wait until they start to remove the nets and ask if you can help yourself to a pile. Usually wet and dirty so make sure you cover your seats if you pick up in the car.
GoodLuck
