What if there is nothing to rent?

Hi,
I am looking sell my house and go into a rental.
However, a letting agency told me they won't even show me properties until I have exchanged contracts on my house sale.
I thought the time between exchange and completion was only about 1 or 2 weeks.
How am I expected to find a rental in just 2 weeks?
Any advice?
Thanks

You could just book into a hotel while you wait/find one, or look for a holiday let, or similar.
There are many different options, all location and date dependent. e.g. at the seaside, in August, buy a big tent.0 -
You can speicity the time betwwen exchange and completion if teh buyer agrees.0

Go to another agency and don't mention the house sale.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

4 weeks between Exchange and Completion is possible. Those already in rental, who don't want to give notice until exchange is confirmed, are in a similar boat...
Longer is possible, even, with negotiation with the other parties.

We moved into a rented house within 3 days of viewing it. So it is possible.0

Had a similar situation and it ended up working out fine. Obviously, when the time comes, you will only be looking at empty property. You will be in a really good position to haggle on the rent because the LL will be looking to limit their void period.0 -
You could be incredibly cautious and take on a rental now for the minimum six months but as you haven't even found a buyer yet every single penny of that could be wasted.
There are all sort of reasons why a sale could go through slowly but none so slow as not having received any offers yet.0 -
When I looked it was 2 weeks before an agent could even make a viewing time for viewing, another 10 days before my moving in date on the form, then a 6 day delay as the LL decided to titfer about with stuff.
crashpadder.com is another way to move in somewhere quickly.
I wanted 2 weeks between exchange/completion, but in order to remove obstacles from the buyer's path that ended up as 2 days .... and as you don't know it will happen until exchange that gave me 2 days to completely clear a house, get rid of everything and move on.
Sometimes you just manage and do stuff because there's no alternative, it has to be done. And it gets sh1tty, but you end up getting through it.0 -
As has been said before, just ask for a longer time between exchange and completion. We were selling our place to a couple who were in rental so it worked out well for both of us: our 2 month+ period between exchange & completion meant that they could give notice and we could find a rental. We still had the issue though that even though we had exchanged, the LAs wouldn't let us view more than 6 weeks or so in advance"Science is a wonderful thing if one does not have to earn one's living at it" Einstein 19510
