my dad has asked for a new wireless router as a birthday present, as his old ones a few years old and sometimes needs rebooting for the printer to work etc.
i am pretty good with computers but not up to date on the technology available and wondered what i should be looking for in a new router? it can be up to say £100-150 as everybody will chip in.
he would like a good one that wont go out of date too soon and will upgrade other components of the network to match in the near future.
thanks for any buying advice!

Go on Amazon.co.uk and search for "Cisco Wireless-N Gigabit Security Router with VPN" (without the quotes) I would send a link but I cant yet.
That should last him many many years to come........does he do anything that he would need all these extras for? if not you are paying over the top for something, just a thought.
Anywho, hoped that helped.0 -
Ask his isp for a free one, or setup a favourite for the router config screen, and reboot remotely!!

£150 for a router that his ISP gives away free?!
Plenty of perfectly serviceable wireless routes on eBay for less than £20, eg the Netgear DG834G.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I'd suggest a look at DrayTek routers. They do well in reliability surveys and will be on my next shopping list.0

Definitely call up and get one for free from his ISP, if you threaten to leave they 99.99% of the time will come up with one (but will be resistant at first).
likely outcome is a free router but getting tied in to your current ISP for another 12 months which if you wern't planning on switching is basically free...
or spend £150 up to you0 -
thanks for all the responses, did some research and looked at reviews and decided to get the netgear dgn3500 from amazon £89.99 it has the gigabit ethernet, usb storage port, and rangemax so should have a good signal.0

To be honest, the reviews on amazon aren't that favourable for the router but its just my opinion. Its also worth noting to make sure you want a DSL router and not a cable router. The DGN3500 is a DSL router so will work with ISP's like BT, Sky, O2 and most providers. Cable modem routers will only work with Virgin media and any other cable internet providers so make sure you get the right one!0 -
I have a Draytek too (cable) and it works very well indeed/ they do an adsl version too with near identical features /BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

Gigabit would only be beneficial if your computer has Gigabit network card.
Would you ever use the USB storage port.....doubtful.
You are paying way over the odds for specifications you would not use.0 -

yes, we did warn the OP but they seem to have £90 burning a hole in their pocket to spend on something they can easily get for free (which most people would do) :A
....if they come to their senses within 7 days at least they can still get a refund under DSR regs0
