It's your choice to work so far away from home and you should have considered the travel costs before you accepted the job!
As it has been said - look for a job closer to where you live
If the OP has been in his job for some while, or the company pays well generally, that might not be any better.
Wages for FLT operators and other warehouse-type work have been seriously depressed over the last few years. Vacancies are often at NMW or a little more, especially outside London. People in jobs paying well are going to want to hang on to them.
OP, I would research car sharing. There just might be someone near you and it would halve your fuel bill.0 -

If you cannot afford the petrol, use public transport.
My hubby is considering buying a car to drive to work as the train fares have risen so much (we are in the south east, and commute to London - no our house isn't worth a lot in Medway - the lowest house prices in the south east just about!) He has a free car park where he works and it isn't within the congestion charge zone. If next year the fares rise as much as this year, then it will be a serious consideration.0 -

Whereas my husband has made the opposite decision. Taking into consideration petrol rises as well as train fare rises it still works out cheaper for him to go by train (not taking into consideration wear and tear on the car). Plus he's happier because he gets to relax on the train and cycle between the train station and office so feels fitter0 -
my husband can't even consider public transport ( pity, as he has a free bus pass as he works on the railway)
he works such unsocial hours, with shifts that can start and end at any time.
he has no choice but to drive 80 miles a day.
he used to have a work vehicle and petrol card for the commute but these were withdrawn 2 years ago for all employyess (though not the managers!)0 -
yes that sounds about right i work night shift as well and normal time of finish is around half past 3 so not an option to use public transport but point well made all the managers are well looked after with either cars or fuel paid not us though we are just numbers wish i could find a job localy but due to bad work climate there just simply isnt anything and still have to put food on the table for the family0

I am not trying to be obtuse, but you are travelling 60 miles a day, that is a huge radius for work. I am not sure what money you are on but the only way I can see it being beneficial to you is if you are on say 5k above nmw, which for an fly is bloody good, or you want to stay for a company pension.
As for managers getting fuel, etc, I expect they will lose these, as almost no company allows for to and from work. Even if they do the person will only receive some of that, as they will be taxed on it (quite heavily too iirc). Most companies are now stopping fuel cards, as they are expensive and people take the pith.0
