Couple of housing benefit queries

Options
I wonder if anyone can help me as i havent claimed for quite a while so would appreciate some answers.

Im being laid off this week so it looks like i will need to claim JSA and HB.

When i claim JSA do i make the HB claim on the phone at the same time or do i have to contact the local authority myself?

Regarding Tax Credits ive heard there is a run on of 4 weeks. How does this affect the claims for JSA and HB?

Finally my child/young adult of 18 is in Full Time Ed and receives EMA and works a few hours on a Saturday morning.
Does this have to be declared and will it affect any of my claims?

ANy help much appreciated

You also need to claim Council tax benefits and you should be able to do them all on-line.

Your childs part time work is not relevent.

When you have your JSA interview, they should ask you if you want to claim HB and CTB but I would always say make a claim with the local authority as all too often, these LAID forms from the jobcentre don't reach us!!

If you are awarded a working tax run on, I think your JSA will start when this ends so your HB claim would be assessed using tax credits and then JSA.

As you have an 18 yr old, they will be a dependant child if you get child benefit and a non dep if you don't.
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.
