European-wide car insurance

I wonder if anyone can help. My wife and I are moving to Italy for work and we need to insure the car in Italy, as well as in UK, as we will be driving between the two on occasion. At the moment, the car is registered in her name, as is the insurance, with a company that doesn't provide European wide cover. I don't have any points (my wife has 6 and was involved in a knock-for-knock crash 2 ys ago). Driving will be pretty much equally shared, I imagine. I am a relatively new driver (since March '05) and wondered: 1) is there a company that provides European wide car insurance for longer than the usual 5 or 30 days (we need it indefinitely, in fact for at least 2 years); 2) would it be advantageous to transfer the registration to my name, as I have no points and I have the Pass Plus Certificate.
Many thanks!

  • Hi mjmjmj,

It doesn't look like many people have been able to help you with this one!!

I know of one company who covers this insurance products. They are Alexander Forbes. You can click here to go to the relevant section of their website which caters for this cover.

You can click on the left hand navigation to get a quote.

Other than that, try using the search engines. The sponsored listings surrounding your results will more than likely return results for general car insurance products. The natural listings in the middle of the page should give you more places to try.

  • Thank you very much, Tim! I will look at that. It is proving vwery hard, yet it shouldn't be such a rare phenomenon.

    I really appreciate the advice.

  • No problems. Good luck in your search and you're right, it shouldn't seem like a rare phenomenon.

I have a similar problem when I motorcycle across Europe - having to tell the insurance provider which country I'm going to be in and on which dates. Sometimes a trip just isn't planned like that!!

    Good luck.

  • Hiya,

A couple of links to follow up on regarding long term car cover abroad

    http://www.easyexpat.com/forums/ftopic_132.htm
    http://www.natives.co.uk/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=8279

I would go through them and extract the helpful bits of information but am short on time - sorry.

I do remember when I first started working abroad that I came across a company who would insure a UK car in Europe for around 11 months a year, it had to be in the UK for 1 month of every 12 but cant for the life of me remeber what the company was called and have not been able to find it again.

Anyway, hope some of the above is of use and good luck in your search - it is a pain I know to get the right product - took me ages when I first started looking into it.

    Regards
    Postie
  • These are really useful links Postie, thanks. I'll plough through them today. From what the DVLA told me and what I have read on EU website we should all be able to drive on our existing policies, but getting onle 3rd party cover, all the time. Unlimited. If this is the case though, how are insurance companies getting away with flouting this and saying no, or putting time limits on stays abroad? It doesn't make sense.
