Sorry to hear about your problem.

On the subject of the VAT BACK i would like to know what people think about not getting the full 17.5% back but only 14.89 % the way sony work out the VAT.

    Sony are correct.

    £80 + vat = £94 ie £14 vat

    14.89% of £94 = £14

This is right, because otherwise you'd be doing 17.5% of £94 which already has VAT included, (so you'd be getting 17.5% of the VAT as well)

14.89 is correct, vat is (or was) calculated from gross, to get the VAT *7/47, which is 14.89%

You will get no where with Sainsburys. It clearly said in the vat back form and on the internet which models were and were not included. Sorry you should always ready the small print with these offers.

Much like companies which claim "We'll pay the VAT!". Which of course is slightly misleading.

Say you had an item for £100 then add the VAT it's £120. So the VAT is £20. Simple.
But, they then give you a discount equivalent to the VAT so you pay £100. So that means the they've reduced the base amount they get by £20? Nope, it's actually £16.67! So the base price becomes £83.33 (approx)

Yes, Tesco are doing that at the moment...

Note that they specifically say "20% OFF" and "THAT'S VAT FREE".
