Tesco Electric Kettle

Please can anyone help me?
I purchased an electric kettle from Tesco Direct 14 months ago.
The kettle was a Tesco's own brand, nothing fancy and cost 15 pounds.
It has recently stopped working and on contacting Tesco Direct Customer Services I was advised that there is nothing Tesco's can do due to the 12 months warranty having expired after 12 months.
I wasn't satisfied with this reply and asked to speak with a manager. I explained the situation and said the kettle is faulty & hasn't lasted a reasonable length of time, but still no joy.
Do I have a right for a refund?

You can stress about it, spend plenty of time and pay for an engineers report to prove the kettle has an inherent fault and then claim back the cost of the report of a new kettle or you could go to somewhere and buy another cheap kettle. I know which I would do.0

As galling as it is, I think you are right. The OP would also have to show what is a reasonable length of time for a kettle to last. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0

No, you don't have a right to a refund, you, possibly, have a right to a suitable remedy. But for a kettle purchased 14 months ago for £15 I think most people would say isn't worth it.0

It may be worth just descaling your kettle, and will cost less than a couple of quid.
Limescale can cause them to stop working.
My branch of Argos will not entertain a complaint of faulty kettle until this has been done.

They could refund if then felt it was appropriate (which by the sounds, they don't). However, given the cost of the kettle and the length of time one might expect it to last they could probably:-
a) Give you a part refund based on the amount of time the kettle may last & the use you've had from it
b) Give you nothing, and consider the kettle may only normally last a year or two.
However the hassle of chasing it & trying to get a report to state there was an inherent fault may simply make it easier to get a replacement etc.0 -

Tesco own brand kettle lasting more than a year... I think it's passed the reasonable length of time and become a wizened sage of a kettle. It is the Yoda of the Tesco kettle world. If you took it to court, you'd probably get about £3 towards the cost of a new kettle.0

I don't think it's faulty. It might have developed a fault but after 14 months of continual use I'd say that wasn't unlikely. If Tesco chose to be more accommodating and offer a refund, they're completely within their rights to deduct money from the £15 in respect of the amount of time the kettle has been in use. I reckon a quid per month's reasonable...
Now how much will that leave as a refund....?

Agreed, and given that you can get a kettle for less than a fiver nowadays, it really is not worth it.Best Regards
