Hi,
OH and I are hoping to start a family later this year and being the organised so and so that I am I want to understand the SMP thang!
My biggest question is over having to return to work or not ... the plan ideally would be for me to stay at home rather than return to work and hand over my salary to the childminder! Obviously this may not work out so I want to understand what I can or can't do.
My company does not offer anything over the statutory maternity pay, so I believe SMP is 6 weeks at 90% of my salary, 33 weeks at statutory maternity pay of £124 per week and then after that it is unpaid. Is this correct?
Also, if I did decide not to return to work do I have to repay the maternity pay I have received? The Direct Gov website isn't that easy to read and I'm worried I have mis-read it.
Thanks!!

No you do not have to repay the SMP unless they paid you more than the SMP rate.
Depending on your joint income you may be entitled to some help towards childcare costs0 -
Wonderful, thanks V much!
Was getting worried that if we decided for me not to return that we'd have to find the money to repay them :eek:Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re probably right ~ Henry Ford0
