yep, they'll take a swipe of your credit card when you arrive (but not charge you anything) so that they have a way of getting the money if you run up a huge room service bill/trash the room and then do a runner ;)

therefore if you don't do this when you arrive at the hotel i'm guessing they wouldn't let you stay?

Is this all hotels or just some hotels ? I stayed in a 4 star in Germany last year that I won and this wasn't needed.I have won another 4 Star hotel (Chain) stay for later this year and there is no mention of Credit Card required ??

This is a standard policy in 5 star hotels, the hotel i used to work in, would allow £200 in cash to be left with the reception if no credit cards could be provided, although this very rarely happened, other option would be to empty mini bar and block all outgoing calls - not all hotels can do that - but whats the problem with the providing cr card anyway?
Want to win this year: 7 day holiday, big ITV cash win, new TV, mobile and funpod! Oh, and new kettle, in black please!

Not everybody has non prepaid Credit Card facility although I understand that hotels will except US/Canadian prepaid secured credit card but not standard UK Prepaid Credit card because it's not really a credit card it's more like a debit card you can't hold the funds on it.As for the mini bar or even the hotel phone who ever uses those ??
