How long to keep paperwork for?

I'm having a massive clear out in the dreaded paperwork cupboard LOL
I have bank statements and bills dating back to 2003 :eek:
Would i be completely mad if i distroy everything up to
March 2010?
It's doing my head in now, time for a coffe break i think...............

I have no bank statements or bills, everything is online. If I need to have it for a certain period, I am either able to check it online or call bank to send me that particular page. Bills are the same,the only paper one I receive is yearly the council tax and water. Rest is online.0

For tax purposes HMRC give advice on how long to retain records (scroll down to the bottom for the info).

If you are going to apply for a mortgage I would also keep some of the bank statements as these are usually required. You can usually get copies from your bank, but many of them charge for this service.0
