Hi
Please help if you can!
I have recently set up broadband at home to use on two computers wirelessly, but I haven't been able to get the wireless connection to work. I bought a netgear DG834G router and a NETGEAR WG311 pci card.
Broadband is working fine on 1st comp with wires, but the other comp just occasionally shows a signal which then disappears (the signal shows as 'good' or 'very good' so im pretty sure distance isnt the prob).
I got through to netgear 3 times, 1st time my phone battery ran out, 2nd time he fobbed me off, 3rd time the line went dead (about 10min ago). Now everytime i ring the line mysteriously goes dead or i get a message saying 'the other person has hung up'!
When I have spoken to people they just go over the basic setup which ive tried over and over (i have got limited comp knowledge). But im sure it must be a more complex issue.
I realise its very hard to help over a chat forum, but if anybodies any idea as to whats going on either with comp or netgear support then please help! I am about to try them from a different phoneline!
Thanks for reading!

PS comp which is working with wires has win 98, other is XP.

You may well find the answer on the web site below. They specialise in ADSL problems, join up and go to the message boards, they are sure to help.

Oops forgot the link.http://www.adslguide.org.uk/I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -
Also search here for information http://kbserver.netgear.com/main.asp
I have found Netgear to be very helpful in the past.
If your second PC is connecting OK at times but dropping wireless signal, it could be down to local conditions, interference (have you got a cordless phone near?) thick walls, pie runs, all sort od things can affect. Try different positioning of your wireless modem router. You can also change the channel that it is operating on in settings to see if that helps.0 -
Thanks for the help!
I will have a look at those sites and try your suggestions.

pie runs should have read pipe runs!!0

Success!
I am writing this on my second computer which is now connected wirelessly!
I changed the channel on the router settings and also uninstalled a couple of programs left over from norton antivirus and firewall (which I had unistalled before I got broadband cos they were slowing my comp down). Then after restarting it just seemed to work!
So im not quite sure what it was that helped, but now its working so thats all that matters!
Thank you both for your help!

Er...not yet!
My router (DG834G) has some sort of firewall in it. Also my ISP (metronet) provides a firewall that I need to set up. I hope this will be sufficient.
Im not sure what antivirus software I'll use, will prob download a freebie. I had Norton System Works before but I think it was too large for my pc, I didnt feel that the extra time it took for my pc to load etc was worth it.Proud to be a moneysaver! :cool:0 -

I've also got the DG834G and by default its Firewall Rules block any Inbound Services. You can check whether its firewall is protecting you by running the various components of the online Shields Up utility. The site has excellent information on internet security written in simple language.0 -
The built in firewall in your Netgear product is all that you need in that respect. I suggest you try AVG6 free edition for antivirus and keep it religiously up to date, I have used it for years with no virus problems. You can download it here after registering

Don't go on the web without it!!0 -
Hi again
Ive tested out my firewall using the Shields Up website, apparently my computer is very secure, and Ive also installed the AVG6 virus checker, which is currently scanning. I now just need to repeat the process on our second computer
Next on the list is securing our wireless network, so that only us can use it. I'm sure this is simple to do, just need to get round to it.
Thanks for the advice, it never ceases to amaze me how helpful everyone on this forum is ;D
