Non-widescreen monitor

Can anyone recommend me a non-widescreen computer monitor, about 19", for somewhere around the £100-£120 mark?

Every monitor I see seems to be either widescreen, which is no good for my desk setup and the work I do, or generally not very good. I'm just looking to replace the one I have now which is of the same spec, an old Relisys monitor that's on its way out.

Thanks for any replies.

I have used some decent iiyama monitors in the past. There is one here that fits your brief, I've not used this particular one, but the specs are quite decent. Just make sure as with any TFT monitor that you run it at the native resolution.
  • Recommendations are a bit moot; you won't have much choice. 4:3 monitors have dropped into the same category as video recorders; low volume products which the manufacturers now charge a premium on. I suspect that, like TVs, they''ll disappear completely sooner rather than later. My Acer TFT (19", about £150 at the time from Argos) is still as good as new; not even a dead pixel, after 5 years.

If you want to do it as cheaply as possible, have a word with the manager in your local Heart Foundation or Oxfam shop. They get a lot of old monitors but don't put many of them out in the shops - they sell them on to dealers. A friendly shop manager should be able to divert one to you.

I thought relisys were a fairly dodgy brand, so anything a few years on will be better on the whole...

You can still get the 4:3 monitors from Dell, but the only place I've seen them is when configuring a high-end Optiplex 980.

If you ring them up you might manage to get one - but you'll find they don't support anything above VGA sockets. I suppose they are 'old stock', as suggested above...
  • There's a selection of non-widescreen monitors here from CCL if it helps.

  • I ended up buying a 19" 4x3 monitor from ebay secondhand. If you search and do a local filter you can wait until one of the right spec comes up local to you so you can collect it rather than pay what is otherwise quite a high price for delivery.

Inexplicably, it hadn't occurred to me to look on ebay. Muppet. Thanks!
  • Watch out for dead pixels when buying second hand.
