I am with Utilita for my Gas supply a few days ago they came to read my meter. Yesterday they took £500 straight from my current account no bill and no notification. Even if I am in arrears can they do that and legally where do I stand. They have taken my mortgage money and now I can't pay that help.

how is your DD set up - full payment or regular monthly amounts?
If you are set up to pay the full bill, then you may find they are right - if its monthly payments then they shouldn't be doing that. Under the DD rules they are supposed to tell you, but they could argue bill got lost in the post.
Ring them, and your bank right now!!Getting fit for 2013 - Starting weight 10.1.13 88.1kg

Tupperware_Queen is right. They cannot take the amount without notifying you first, even if you are set up for full payment. When did they take the money? They couldn't of taken on a Sunday if it's a direct debit and it's unlikely a debit card payment would debit on a Sunday either.
If it's a DD, get on to your bank right away, they could be able to reclaim it straight away, or otherwise raise a Direct Debit Indemnity claim. Also speak to Utilitia to arrange a payment plan. Hope this helps! =DI work for first direct and have previously worked for Santander.
Any information I give should not been seen as being given from first direct or Santander however I do have certain knowledge from working there.
