As a gamer of long standing, I would say your best bet would be to buy a PS1 to start with.There are plenty of used cheap games around that are great fun for an 8 yr old to learn on.
I still have one and loads of games but as I also have a PS2 backward compatible I use that to play PS1 games on.
I am sure he will get lots of pleasure from this and cheaply too!You live..You learn.:)0
