Or ask on the Debt Free Wanabee board, theres loads there with plenty of advice for just this sort of situation. I've seen it come up loads of times, but I can't remember the advice.
  • If this debt is from 10 years ago and you have not acknowledged it at all in the last 6 years then there is no debt to pay. After 6 years the debt becomes statued barred which means it is no longer enforceable and is written off. You owe absolutely NOTHING. Tell them to get stuffed.

Some years ago I moved into a shared flat in Essex and got a debt letter for a TV which somebody had bought on HP and defaulted on. I knew it wasn't me so I called the Police and they, well he, came round and took a statement. When they investigated the matter - it turned out the person's bank account was Barclays and I've never been with Barclays. I could therefore prove it wasn't me but it was quite scary until it was sorted.
Don't grow up. Its a trap!

    Peace, love and labradors!
  • It is a worry whem someone does this. Funny thing is i had someone doe that with a t.v. on me about 15 years ago. I even got letter from TV Licensing. Like you I could prove it wasn't me for one thing it was a guy that had bought it and im female :)
  • Wow that's brilliant scrooge, so if they claim its from 1992 say we just say well the debt should be void then so stuff you!?? Is it that it has to be more than 6 years old? Please just confirm that.
And thanks to you all for all the brillaint advice.
  • Yes that is correct if the debt has not been aknowledged in 6 years it is not longer payable. Stauate of limitations states 6 years. You have to be within this time frame to even recall your bank charges. It applies to all debts.
  • Brilliant thanks :)
  • Theres tons more info on this on the debt free board. Any letters that are needed to prove debt i would look up all the posts by a guy called harrassed (check the r/s), if you cannot find them the same letters are on the
