N Power!!!

A while ago I posted about the trouble I had got into when changing my gas supply to N Power.
To cut a long story short I had a debt on my pre-payment meter of £170 which was the standing charge over the summer months.
I changed my supply back to British Gas.
Unfortunately the debt was still on the meter and for every £10 credit I bought £6.86 was taken for the debt, .14p for the emergency credit which left £3 for gas! It has taken nearly two years but finally the debt has been paid and the meter now gives me exactly what I have bought.
Glad it was all over with imagine my surprise yesterday when I received a letter from N Power stating I still owed them £170!
I immediately rang N Power and asked what was going on? They said they had not received any money since 2009! When I asked where the money the meter has been taking had gone they replied they 'didn't know but it had not gone to them'.
So after paying off all that money thay say Ill have to pay again! They insinuated British Gas had been taking the debt and kept it!
All seems rather dodgy to me and a little odd to hear this just after Ive finished paying it off! Not a dickie before.
I dont know what to do now. All that money has gone somewhere! Also why has it taken N Power so long to chase up the money if they've had nothing since 2009? Surely they are responsible for collecting their money?........ help!!!

  • have you got any of your paypoint recipts for your key top-ups? If not, contact CAB. Ive just had my meter re-set as it was still taking off a debt that wasnt even mine.

  • british gas should have sent you a new gas card that reset the meter and removed the debt or arranged for someone to come out and manually reset the meter to remove the debt. did this happen or did you continue using the npower gas card?

npower most likely wont have received the payments, they will more than likely have gone to british gas and on british gas computer account for yourself it could be possible that you are showing a credit.

you need to phone british gas first of all and establish whats going on with your current account, and then look at where the payments have gone if british gas havent got them.

If BG sent you a card this should have reset your meter but sometimes this fails. If you were allowed to leave with a debt that BG would take over then they should have given you a new card and programmed the debt onto it.

You need to find out what happened by contacting BG. If they did the first and it did not work then they will need a meter reading to bill your account to and the information re how much credit is on your meter. They should then have a surplus on your account which they can send to Npower.

If the second then Npower should have been aware of this but I'm sure BG will be able to sort it out.
