Android Phone - Data Usage Really High

Please help!

Got my last phone bill which was huge.
With vodafone, have had a shock as my data allowance is 1 gig but I've used 2.93 in the last month - an extra 25 quid on my phone bill - 500 megs = £5. Not good money saving!

Any advice on what I can do to curb this usage? I've currently removed the auto syncing of email/contacts etc, but am amazed at 3 gig usage, which includes nothing like videos or music streaming.

Completely stumped! I rang vodafone who said I couldn't upgrade to a bigger data allowance which is a super pain :(

Make sure you switch 3g off completely when you don't need it.

Download a data counter to keep an eye on what you are using.

I use 3g on my Desire all the time (it's never switched off) and in a year, I've never gone over 700MB, let alone worry my 3GB T-Mobile limit. I'd install 3G-Watchdog and do some testing to see what you are doing which is so data hungry.

Yeh you are clearly having something on which shouldn't be. 3GB is a lot to use if you aren't watching videos or streaming of something...

If you have things like Facebook updating it refreshes contact info all the time uses bandwidth and kills the battery, check all your apps see what they are doing.

  • My husband had a problem with a radio iphone app which stated it was free to use but didn't warn you that whilst using it you would be running up the data charges - do you use any radio or gps/sat nav apps?

I have a HTC Desire HD - I have my email alerts on plus facebook updates and browse the web alot and this month have only used 120 MB of my 750 MB allowance. I have the 3G watchdog app and find the predicted usage monitor really helpful.
  • pop into applications and see what's running, kill unnecessary apps.
you could even d/load one of the batter savers, can't remeber which one, but i had one that dhut all unnecessary apps at the touch of a button, now my phone is rooted and running a different set of software so it's all good :)

Also, not too sure how off the top of my head, you can get the phone automatically turn on/off wireless as it's connected to the charger,,which would cut down on data usage.

..but, as everyone has said, that's an awful lot of data for a phone, something is eating a lot of it.

Don't be daft - everybody knows they are much too busy looking after iPlayer. Internet radio is handled by pixies.

He isn't technically minded and doesn't really worry about how things work, all he wanted to do was listen to the radio at work!

Often such people are the prey of companies making excess usage charges for internet data. Other ways they get parted from their hard earned is by buying extended warranties, excessively priced data cables, and all manner of other snake oil.

Some are even proud of their ignorance and look down on "geeks" who take the trouble to try and understand the world around them.
