    Beebus, yes, you are required to gather the assets of the estate to pay the creditors appropriately. You can deduct your reasonable costs - out of pocket costs are easy enough. The creditors have lost money but you do have to try to minimise their loss and can't just ignore money.

    You can walk away from the estate and do nothing, leaving the creditors to apply for probate

    But you must do nothing - you can't pick and choose bits of it. You can't claim the bank accounts and not the insurance. What you are doing is renouncing executorship, which you can't do once you have started on the job
