car rubbish - dealer gone bust :-(
my brother bought a car oct 2010. for £2000.
within 2 days there was a problem and a few days later there was another problem, which eventually after a lot of tooing and froing over a few weeks, grew to a major problem, and here we are now.
the car is with the dealer, no idea where, supposedly having a new engine fitted. well that was 2 weeks ago, got a text a few days ago, the engine was the wrong one, so if you need a replacement car til its fixed i will get one to you monday (31st jan, tomorrow) just got to tax it first.
we dont believe the replacement car will turn up and we have no idea what state the original car is in.
the dealer has been in our town for many years and is well known to us and many, (which is why we chose to buy the car from him)
he went bust just before xmas.
what can we do?
please help

Did he take out finance with the dealer or pay a deposit on credit card? He'll have some protection through section 75 of the consumer credit act. Here's a link to Martin's article on it - the very first example features a car purchase...

he paid with a personal cheque.
what can we do?

You say they went bust before Xmas! Who is contacting you now?
The first thing I would do is locate the car, and inform whoever has it that it is your property! If a third party garage has it and there is money owing against work they are going to want paying!0 -
If the dealer went bust before Chrismas, who is attempting to repair the car??"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

As above, you need to get all those questions answered. Also you will need proof of ownership ie, receipt to get the car back. The garage may just have been fudging so perhaps no work has been done, which in this case may not be a bad thing,I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
the car is being repaired at the dealers repair man,
the replacement car has turned up, so thats good.
at least my brother has a vehicle once more.
this car is a mazda demio 1.5 so im thinking its of similar value to the broken astra.
can we suggest that we just keep this car if its ok.

Sounds like you have a good dealer there if he’s still sorting out customer problems having gone bust.
Lots of threads on here about dealers trying to avoid fixing customer problems whilst they are still trading.0 -
This situation is more complicated than us mse morons can decypher.
Get legal advice,I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
