When assessing a claim for JSA, they check NI contributions and then check savings, income, etc. If you're entitled to income based, you'd get told after being turned down for contributions based.

That doesn't often appear to be the case though.

Lots of people who don't know much about benefits apply for contributions based JSA, get turned down (without any additional info they can still claim income based JSA) and then assume that they aren't entitled to anything.

If you look on google, you'll see loads of threads where this has happened, and the thread starters are often shocked to find out that they can still get JSA (just not contribution based JSA).

Must be their way of trying to reduce JSA claims.
  • I sent an email yesterday to query again if they have calculated the right years in relation to contribution based jsa. I have just received a phone call and have been told again that 07/08 and 08/09 are the right even though the new benefit year started in January 2011 they dont use 08/09 and 09/10 until April 2011....
  • I have had a letter today saying that there are changes but could not continue my claim as I had failed to sign on.... didn't bother as I had been told by 2 people that I had not contributed enough !!!

I phoned today and was told that my last claim was linked into my last claim and therefore they could not change the tax years but said if I had put a new claim in then they would of looked at different tax years.. I said that I had spoken to 2 people and the last one said specially that the tax years calculated would not changed until April 2011... she said this is not true...

I am soo angry.. I asked her why they intentionally trip people up so they cannot claim !! I have never claimed benefits before and just needed a bit of help before starting a job. She said she would look into it but I doubt it.. My family have struggled unnecessarily because of this, I have got into more debt and my sister has had to send me food parcels weekly to feed my 4 children when she has 5 of her own. I appreciate that I am not entitled to benefits because I have applied but I do expect to be advised honestly..... I am going to write another letter...
