Able to get a card?

Options
My current credit card is a RBS student cc with a £500. I'd quite like to get a higher limit for purchases such as a new computer. My current contracted salary is only £404 4-weekly (but I live with parents, and get overtime), so I can't see any other suitable RBS cards as they all ask for a higher salary. Given that my credit file doesn't show any problems with credit, would I be able to get a card such as the capital one progress or classic with a larger credit limit? With my income am I practically guaranteed to be rejected?

TIA, integral.

You dont have a big chance, without a lecture dont spends stupid money on computers they dont hold value.
  • How much are you able to save from your wages?

If the answer is nil then you cannot afford a higher limit.
If you do have savings you still don't need a higher limit just use the credit card for some of the transaction and cash for the rest.
  • Ring up to get a higher limit I don't see a problem you getting a higher limit as your income to credit limit ratio is low. Don't expect a vast increase though. You better off asking with current provider rather than risk applying for new credit card.
  • I don't believe student credit cards can have a line of credit above £500 with RBS / NatWest.

I would suggest checking barclaycard pre approval page, if your attempting to apply for credit to purchase something you intend to pay back over a period of months try to get a card with 0% on purchases.

If you make an application with a prime lender eg. Barclaycard and they decline your application, I would suggest applying for a Capital One Classic and building your history more. Also if you have had recent searches on your credit reference files, eg. you have applied for overdrafts, credit cards or mobile phone contracts within the last 6 months this may affect the likeleyhood of your application being approved.

Having two credit cards won't build history faster than one.

In fact, having a new obligation (e.g. capital one classic) will in fact have a detrimental effect on OPs credit score for a short time due to it being a "NEW" account. Prime lenders want to see applicants with a well establish payment history across all their accounts, so if anyone opens a credit card don't expect to be approved for another one for six months after it shows up on your credit file.

Best to leave as is and just try again in six months if declined for a prime card. :o
