I've just been given one of the above (Thomson 585) by an ex-Plusnet customer.
Are they firmware locked to Plusnet, or can they be used on any ADSL service please?

Sounds like it may be possible, this may be worth a read.

Thanks, please could someone outline the procedure for flashing the firmware now I have the generic file?
I realise that this may brick the router, but it was a freebie anyway, and it's no use locked, so thought I'd give it a go.

Maybe the last post in this thread will help?
  • Thomson routers are crap anyway. I would never buy another after what they have been doing, imposing limits on the router and stopping certain tools from functioning.

I did buy a Thomson router just over 5.5 years ago and use it now because it is not limited but more recent routers such as 716 & 585 do have limitations, the 585 being the worse of the two other routers I have.

Thanks, I've already got the generic upgrade fie but what i'm not clear on is how i now carry out the upgrade?
How do I run the file and apply it to the router-there's no clue within the existing router configuration for that.

Use the Thomson upgradeST utility available here

Darn it - just the same utility that appears in the final post of the thread I pointed to!

Why don't you try it before possibly bricking it ?

I have tried it-it works fine but it is locked to Plusnet or Madasfish. If it works I will give it to a friend to use in place of an ancient Homehub 1.0-it's got to be better than that.
Will try using the utility to flash it tonight.

If you know someone who can configure routers from command line (telnet or other terminal software) then it's still possible to configure from there. The software put onto the 585 by the providers just cripples options using the web interface but is still fully accessible from telnet.
