My 3yr old PS3 suffered from the "Yellow Light of Death" yesterday morning. I had 3 options:
1. Get it repair (£80 ish)
2. Buy a brand new PS3 (£230ish)
3. Try and repair it myself
Personally, i'd rather have bought a brand new PS3 Slim with a larger HDD than get my current one fixed. Yes, it would cost £150 more but at least it would be brand new, look neater etc. Therefore as paying for a repair was least preferred option I decided to give it a go myself.
A little googling this morning reviled the hair-dryer trick. No harm in having a go at this. I stripped the console back to the motherboard and gave it 5 mins blast with the hair-dryer. At which point I decided that this really was a pointless exercise so put it all back together and powered it up...and would you believe it...it works! It's been on now for about 4 hours with no problems.
Did the hair-dryer trick work? I doubt it!! However, as the YLOD is a non-specific hardware error I'm pretty sure that in removing all the cables and the repositioning them has fixed the problem.
So, if anyone has the YLOD and is fairly comfortable with opening up their PS3 then I'd seriously suggest removing the bluray drive, bluetooth/wifi card etc and reconnecting them.
