RTA question

Last Thursday evening I was involved in a road accident. I won't go into all the details but I gave what the officer described as a "brief statement" and he said he would phone me the following day.

It's now Sunday afternoon and I've not heard anything from him.

The problem is, I don't have his details or the station he works from (or the names and addresses of witnesses)

My question is, should I have been given a copy of the statement I signed at the time? Which I presume would have had his details.

Thanks.

  • No they dont usually provide you with anything. If it was in an area of cctv footage, he will get that evidence as part of his enquiries.

This is presuming the 3rd party did something reckless and drove off. I have had a similar issue with the police, where they actually told me they would arrest a guy in a lorry that drove off. I had to raise the issue with the chief of motorway policing to get them to pull there finger out (he was like chief wigham on the simpsons). All they do is speak to the other driver, check there rule book to see of there is a conviction in it and then file it as resolved if there isn't.

They will not give you a crime ref number unless they arrest the 3rd party, and you will have to give your insurance company the call log/ref that they should give you. if it was not your fault I would push for your insurer to chase this up with the police. If it was not I would stay quite. I would also check that your car is roadworthy, unless it was smashed beyond repair, as the police will want to speck to you and come and take picture of your car, comprendy..

Hope this helps. I am waiting since Sept last year for a result of my claim.
The harder one works the luckier one gets!
  • Thanks dm
Actually the accident was caused by an 8 yr old lad running into the side of my car.
Fortunately I was only doing about 15 mph and had practically stopped when he ran into my front wing and fractured his ankle (think his foot hit the front wheel) Apart from that I think he was just shocked ... so was I

A local resident was there immediately and said he'd seen what happened and it wasn't my fault.
Even the boys mother who arrived a couple of minutes later appologised to me !

Problem is the insurance co. needs some details. Wasn't sure if I should have been given a copy of my statement. Didn't want to cause problems for the officer if he should have supplied this.

Suppose I'll have to phone the local cops and see whats happening.

    Thanks again

Good luck to you, it's taken me 5 months to get the details of of a driver who knocked me off my bike even though the police interviewed him at the scene prior to my departure to hospital.
  • Hi eddie, 5 months? .. better not hold my breath then ... hope you weren't badly hurt.

I suppose it must differ with different police forces.

I was involved in an RTA a few weeks ago. The police attended. Took a brief statement from me and left me with a form that listed the other vehicles' details plus an incident number and the ID numbers of three of the four officers who attended. I was able to give the incident number to the insurance company who I doubt even followed it up.

It's a shame you have to be the one to make the effort. Good luck.

That's bollox, they won't have a crime number unless the is evidence of a recordable crime.;)

Just had phone call from a friend who I've been trying to get in touch with all day. He was a traffic officer in the area, now a sergeant in another area. Confirms that I wouldn't get a copy of the statement but could have been given a card with relevant details.

Says he will look it up on the system and email the cop concerned.

Might save me some aggro - thanks everyone.
