HELP! iBook power cable sliced!

I need your sage advice people!

Basically our pet rabbit has just gone through the cable between the adaptor and the connector (not the plug side but the computer side) of our ibook adaptor.

I've just seen how much replacements are and am wondering whether, if i took it down to our local techie shop, they might be able to splice the cable and put it back into a workable state so that we could use it but not fry the ibook!

Any views?

HELP!!!

  • We had a similar thing - with gerbils. Long story. We used gaffa tape to repair, that but it was only nibbled rather than spliced.

You might be able to find one from the clearance section of the Apple Mac online store:here. Keep checking since I think their stock has a high turnover. I'm sure somebody else with more techy experience will be along shortly to give a better answer ;)

It's not a good idea to repair damaged power cables, I think the best bet is to try and find a cheap replacement (eBay, maybe).

Hope the bunny didn't get too much of a shock!

Fortunately it wasn't plugged in. He's done that before, though, too!

Apparently our local techie/aerial/leccy stuff people reckon they can do it for a fiver. I'm worried now after you said that it's not a good idea! I'm presuming they'd splice the wire and use some sort of connector so it was safe, though.

Well, if it's done by professionals it'll probably be safe. However, if your iBook is still under warrenty you could void it by using the repaired cable

Sadly it's out of warranty - by about 6 months, I think. I was thinking about this. Presumably if the adaptor box is fine and they can just splice and put back together with some sort of connector, the same amount of ... erm... electricity stuff is going to go into the iBook because that's controlled by the adaptor?

  • You could do it yourself, remove some of the outer cover till you fet to the inner wires on both ends then strip back some of the wires and join the colours together.

It isnt like it is 240v your dealing with proberlby 19v or less maybe. wrap the wires individually up with insulation tape then wrap the whole lot quite a few times to protect the joins from jorting ect it it works you saved yourself some money if not then you could fry the laptop. remove the tape chew the cable up on both ends and blame the rabit and inform your insurance company

I'm scared of trying it myself - especially if they do say they can fix it for a fiver! I know that's not very MSE of me but I'd rather have someone to blame!!! :D
