You're lucky you got a sympathetic customer service advisor. I've had coroners reports faxed through to me before (i work in debt recovery). Its horrible to say but the amount of people who use the 'my partner/son/daughter/dad/mom has died' trick is on the up. If we can't get proof (death certificate) we send out private investigators to find out the truth. Sounds extreme but you can't trust people nowadays!
I think ringing up saying someone has died is a despicable thing to do. It may pay off in the short term but more than likely it will come back to bite you in the bum!
Oh....have a word with Sky and be honest with them. They will probably come around and remove the box etc but they can be quite sympathetic......just don't tell them you have snuffed it!

My husband managed to downgrade our sky package after explaining that there had been a change in our financial circumstances and that the expensive package was a luxury that we could ill afford. We got the package changed. After we had reached the 12 months we phoned to cancel and we were offered a less half price deal for three months. After this we cancelled but were told we could come back to them at anytime and would get a good deal.
I think SKY are good to deal with and will offer you lots of special offers/ deals that aren't advertised to get you to stay with them
Let me know how you get on, good luck!Skint- Gall

UPDATE
Okay, I've just got off the phone with SKY after 32mins on the phone :S
They allowed me to basically cancel my existing packages but not the SKY HD or associated SKY+ - each £10 per month.
So now I have a SKY HD package and a SKY+ package but I can only view freeview channels and BBC HD!
All of this is irrelevant as I'm now going to sell the 32" HD Ready LCD TV I bought last month to recoup some money and help towards my debt!
Cheers

I previously worked in the travel industry and it was a well known excuse to get home/change flight details etc. The airline asked for faxed copies of certificates to verify the information.
I read a new contract on sky & it stated if you cancel you must pay the 12 month contact in full. It may well be different though as it was an introductory offer.0 -
Yeah my view is that if you have legitimitely suffered a loss then you wouldn't have any objections to sending through a copy of the death certificate. Its not as if we ask for it straight away. Its certainly less stressful than having people hound you for your dead family members debts. As soon as people 'fly off the handle' you know that they are lying...0
