Can I get out of my £57 a month SKY contract?

Hi all

Only last month I upgraded my sky package and got SKY HD.

I've now had my lightbulb moment and need to start finding money to help pay the bills (currently got more going out than coming in).

Has anyone had experience of cancelling a contract with SKY?

I know that they say that it's a 12month contract but I wanted to know of other's experience.

Cheers

  • We weren't allowed to cancel until we'd reached the minimum 12 months. I think they give you a cooling off period after upgrading though so it might be worth a call and saying you've changed your mind and see what they say.

  • His wife did it and they were asking her for a death certificate, she panicked and started going mad at them, crying and generally acting like a mad woman. Anyway, she managed to get it done....

Try calling them and asking to be downgraded (if you're outside the cooling off period). They probably won't allow you to cancel it, but they should let you move to the cheapest possible contract.

it may sound hilarious I don't think it is a good idea, the best thing to do is to ring sky and tell them that your situation has changed and you will not be able to afford the monthly payment any more. and you need to dowgrade to a lower payment.

Would that come back to haunt you (pun intended :D) down the line though? He could apply for a new contract with someone and they turn around and say 'uh sorry aren't you dead?'. What if they put a notice on his credit report saying he was deceased??

Exactly, I'd be very, very wary of playing dead. It may indeed result in a freeze being put on your credit report, your accounts etc, causing all manner of headaches. Not to mention being charged for it when you're found out...

    Your joking right?
Noting that this of course is breaking the law and could (rightly so) end up with the person going to prison. It's a low and sick trick.

I'd say ringing them and asking about the cooling down period or re-downgrading is a better option.

  • I think you can be *lucky* if you get the right person.
Explain to them that you are in a very unfortunate financial position and that you will not be able to make the payments, and thus would like them to stop the service now, before things deteriate, and proceedings are brought forward.
(Oh and tell a LWL, say you've just been sacked - sorry :( )
Personally I would then put the same in writing, quoting the name of the person you spoke to and should they not back down, and things DID go to court, you would have evidence that you tried to mediate with them at the first realisation.

    I hope that helps

    Good luck
