As part of my making cheap christmas pressies I want to make some cheap but yummy chutney. Has anyone got a good recipe that goes with turkey, meats etc & lasts a while? All help gratefully received, esp lovely old family recipes!!

I've a good apple and onion chutney which is good with pork and cheese - just off for my baked potato with cheese and chutney now.
I've also made cranberry and spiced apple chutney - it was an adapted recipe but I can give you the basic recipe if you like.
Anyone got a good green tomato one? The one I made was rather bland. I don't want one that is curry based though.7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0 -

I have a lovely green tomato chutney recipe handed down from my Gran to my mum and then to me! I've worked out the metric equivelents and added them.
1.4 kg / 3lb Green tomatos
450 g / 1lb Apples peeled and cored
225 g / 8 oz Onions skinned
225 g / 8 oz Sultanas
225 g / 8 oz Demerara sugar
10 ml / 2 level tsp Salt
400 ml / 3/4 pt Malt vinegar
4 small pieces of Root ginger
2.5 ml / 1/2 level tsp Cayenne pepper
5 ml / 1 level tsp Dry mustard
1. Scald the tomatoes and remove the skin then slice thinly with a sharp knife.
2. Mince or finely chop the apples and onions, Place these in a preserving pan with the tomatoes.
3. Add all the remaining ingredients and bring the mixture slowly to the boil.
4. Reduce the heat once boiling and simmer until tender and thick.
5. Remove the ginger, pot into sterilized jars and cover with a vinegar-proof lid.A penny saved is a penny earned

I have also just dicovered this chutney recipe and it seems to go really well with cooked meat ( not exactly cheap, sorry), you need to like garlic though! this recipe reduces alot and I found it only made 2 jars...but the flavour if fab!! the 2 nd batch I made I trippled the recipe, its alot of garlic peeling  but worth it in the end.
1 kg / 2 1/2 lb Tomatoes skinned and chopped
150 ml / 1/4 pt White wine vinegar
1/2 tsp Ground cloves
1 tsp Ground cumin
2.5 cm / 1 " Fresh root ginger, chopped
20 plump garlic cloves, peeled and left whole
2 Red chillis, finely chopped
150 g / 5 oz Brown sugar
1 tsp Ground cardamom
2 tbs Thai fish sauce
Put all the ingredients into a pan. Bring slowly to the boil. Cook for roughly 1 hour until really thick. Put into sterilised jars and seal with vinegar-proof lids.A penny saved is a penny earned

Thanks all you're fab!! Will have a peek & decide...what is a vinegar proof lid though? Sorry to be dull...never made it before!Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible.0

A vinegar proof lid is anything thats not metal, as vinegar will react with the metal and corrode it. So use a plastic lidded jar if you can or the sellophane pot covers that you can buy for jam making. The latter being available from places like Robert Dyas and include wax disks for laying on the surface of your filled pot to keep any air bourne mould spores from landing on it, sellophane circles to put over the pot, elastic bands to hold the sellophane on with and labels.
If however you have kept any old pickle jars and their lids it would be ok to use them as they are specifically made for the job.
Happy chutney making!A penny saved is a penny earned
