Same as a new driver would be good, revoke the licence for 6 points, retake the test, and if you manage to get another 6 points, revoke again, and you can't re-take the test until the 12 point ban has expired.

I do hope you are not suggesting this instead of a time-limited licence, as I would see this as a smoke-screen to be honest. No driver should be given the right in perpetuity to drive without checks, and you and I (as a driver of 15 years and nearly 300,000 miles who has never so much as received a warning from the BiB) are included in this.

I for one would welcome an opportunity for an expert to show me where I do things wrong.

You can if you want to.
But if you have no points, it would suggest your driving skills are better than those who visibly advertise their skills as substandard, and rack up the offenses.

There's no particular reason why the retests should be paid for at the point of delivery in any case.

But you can bet your bottom dollar it would be

Oh I quite agree, and I think your suggestion is an excellent idea. I would just go further (and in fact am in favour of very lengthy bans for those drivers who have been shown to be reckless -- 5-10 years in some cases depending on the offence).

I don't for one minute think my driving is up to snuff. I've managed to stay within the law and drive in what has been statistically proven to be a fundamentally safe manner. I still beat myself up when I know I've made a mistake though, and would like to better any aspect of my driving that, whilst not necessarily visibly substandard, could do with improvement.

I probably should take the time to take an advanced driving course.

I have changed back from automatic to manual. A manual gear box gives me much more control over how I want to drive, whereas an automatic can't tell what mood i'm in.

Plus some car's aren't available in automatic (eg MR2) and cars with automatic gearboxes generally cost more to buy.

Nothing will stop you making a mistake.
It's when you justify the same mistake it's bad driving.

    > It's when you justify the same mistake it's bad driving.

Or when you systematically don't realise you've made it.

My biggest driving fault is the rod up my backside when it comes to driving properly, I know that myself. I expect others to behave in a predictable manner and I get upset when they don't -- even if I've anticipated things seconds, even minutes in advance. It's not a good characteristic, I know.

That's something you know, and no amount of anyone else telling you will change it, even if you only realise later you're still doing it.
It's something you have to change yourself.
  • I suspected quite a lot of support from those who prefer manuals despite having never spent any time driving an automatic but here is perhaps the answer:

If they invented cars today, they would have automatic gearboxes and no-one would even contemplate developing a manual version.
