ESA - contribution based . Earn money?

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if, when on contribution based ESA, how much money, if any, you can earn, via ebay or any other way?

Just I have a few things I want to put on ebay, but don't want to get into trouble!

My friend is also wondering the same thing, however she is on Income based ESA.

If anyone could let me know, I'd really appreciate it :T

Thank you in advance :)

my understanding is that as a private seller you can sell your own second hand belongings without their being any tax (and I assume benefit) effects. You often see advice on here when people are struggling as "do you not have anything you can sell" If however it is new goods purchased to sell on this is classed as a business seller and would affect tax etc

If you are only selling things you already own, you should be ok on ESA C or IR.
If you intend to buy items on a regular basis to then sell on ebay, then JCP may consider that you are undertaking Permitted Work (PW). More info about PW is here-

  • Hi,

Thanks very much for your replies. My problem is, I have alot of presents that I want to sell, so they would be sold as new (still with tags, or in original packaging etc) - so it's not second hand, but I haven't bought them to sell. Is this still allowed? As they are one off items, here and there, but as I had them as a gift, anything I make will be profit. This is where I'm getting confused, as it all gets a bit blurry then!

Any other advice would be appreciated.

    Thank you :)

As they are your own possessions you are selling it will be fine.
