Really need advice - credit report/CIFAS

Around the middle of last year someone fraudulently used my card and also tried to open a national lottery credit account in my name. I spotted all this and it was sorted. I saw the check on my credit report and discussed it with Experian, who put me onto CIFAS, who advised they could add a marker to my report such that future requests to open accounts would need to go through additional checks. This seemed safe to me so I went ahead with it.

Since then it has been impossible for me to get credit. Before this time it was not. I checked my credit report - my score is a perfect 999. I have no active credit cards etc as I paid them and chose to close them (silly I realise now as one would be useful for emergencies and overseas travel - hence why I have been trying to get another). I have never missed a payment on anything - my report shows all payments met etc, hence I guess why my score is perfect! I've applied for a couple of cards in the last 4 months and both requests have been denied. This makes no sense. Aside from the credit report, I am a high earner in a permanent job I've been in for 4 years. I also work in banking Compliance (but investment banking, not retail, and CIFAS related issues don't touch on my specific role). I've never once had a late fee in my life.

I can only think this has something to do with the CIFAS marker and I am feeling like it was missold to me - as something that would protect me. Instead it is blocking my own genuine credit requests and causing problems.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it possible to remove it given it was added at my request (upon advice!!)? I've emailed CIFAS but haven't heard from them yet.

Any help gratefully received. I feel like my perfect credit report has effectively been blacklisted because of this, which is very frustrating!

Write to CIFAS (recorded delivery) and ask them to remove the marker.
