    You could try www.myhammer.co.uk.

You could put up a description of each job - even a picture of what needs doing, timescale and you will get quotes. You put in your postcode so they can decide whether they want to travel.

The worksmen have a rating from previous customers.

I tried recently and within a couple of days had quite a few quotes including someone quite local. In the end I didn't use it because someone through a friend offered to do it.

Another alternative may be to ask a estate agent that does rentals for some suggestions - they usually have a bunch of handymen on their books to sort out leaks etc.

    Thank you people!

I am 30 something, have no parents, my neighbours are drunk, and had one builder freind who didn't want to help me. And, again, I will not do these myself. Being a dried up work driven creer gal (!) I am much too busy with my job, and there are too many to do and while I did fix all the rest of the problem myself (like fixing skirting board, cementing wall gaps), these are NOT something I want to even attemp to do.

Council thing, I can't seem to find it. Maybe I should have explained that GreenBook is supposed to be THE directory for tradesmen as they have to be refered to be in it? The directory is considred to be better than yell, and I never had any problem with peopl off yell, so I am surprised by this result.

Not sure on estate agents, they only help peple who pay them, so money driven. But myhammer sounds like a choice.

Why do I feel like I have to flirt, and kiss their axrses to get the job done? I only got quote out of them when I had my hair done with skimpy clothes on, more or less!

I have a friend who's a self employed handy man, and as a lass wouldn't want someone I didn't know in my house, he's also useful if I need a number for more skilled jobs like corgi registered, I would ask family and friends who they've used to do jobs in the past, you don't want some cack handed idiot making more of a mess.
