If it is continuing to happen, then it may be worth putting in your own product key as I mentioned in post #4. This will be a genuine key, and not the OEM key that is on there at the moment from the factory build - assuming of course you didn't have to enter the key when you fist set the laptop up.
It may be worth extracting the current key before you do it with something like produkey just in case you need to backtrack.
It doesn't give me the option of changing the product key when in the system control panel?0 -

I am an hours drive from the nearest Currys and I don't drive! :rotfl:
Hoping to get it sorted out myself rather than have to try and get there with 3 kids aged 5 and under :rotfl:0 -
I could be well off the mark here but might this have something to do with Windows update KB971033. I'm sure I read somewhere that it has wrongly flagged up counterfeit software. I dont know enough about it but maybe someone else might know if this may be relevent or not?Herman - MP for all!0

Strange it doesn't allow you to change the key, must be something that kicks in when it thinks it is counterfeit.
Are you up to date with Windows updates, there may be something there that may help. After that things are going to get more difficult, and I would suggest now is a good time to make sure your backups are current.
May be worth a phone call to Curry's tomorrow, but I suspect they will suggest a factory restore0 -
Have you updated your Windows recently, or have you installed something new onto your computer, including hardware?
I've had the same problem with my 7 before, and it happened after I patched my Windows (remember the Black Screen of Death incident?) and it completely messed up my computer.
I had to do quite a few system restore before that went away.0 -
Just checked windows updates and there is Update for Windows 7 (KB976902).
However it appears to be failing to install. Having failed to install om the 18/01, 23/01 and 30/01.

Code 8000FFFF Windows encountered an unknown error. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

I am having exactly the same problem with my laptop. It started this morning. I bought mine from Currys dec 2009 and software wise it has been fine until today. I can't read my product key from the bottom as its been worn away so I think it will be a trip to currys
Good luck fixing yours and If I find a way I will let you know.
