We know his work is ok :-) Not sure about the fittings or the cost. Also should we have more waterproofing on the shower than replaster and tiles? And how much more would making it more like a wet room be - I am worried about stepping up into the shower as we get older (not a problem just now though!!)

Many thanks for any input - you are a really helpful bunch on here

    Sounds OK to me.
We had our en suite done last year: remove all old tiles, fittings, shower, enclosure & tray. Install fully tiled wetroom with drench type shower, re-installing existing radiator, washbasin, bidet & WC (WC moved to opposite side of room, necessitating new soil pipe installation & filling of existing gap), floor to ceiling glass screen at 1.5 sides of shower, underfloor heating, spotlighting, supply & fit new mirrored & illuminated wall cabinet & new extractor fan. This cost £6K in total. (Much of this being due to my expensive taste in tiles :o)
It was in the the middle of the 3 quotes we sought, and we went with them because we liked the examples of work they showed us which they had done for previous clients, and we just had a good feeling about the people and their professional approach to the job. We had a daily meeting with the project manager who informed us every step of the way and sought out guidance whenever there was an option to be considered. They did a great job and we have been very pleased with the end result, we consider it money well spent.
We were hoping to have them back to do our main bathroom, but sadly they appear to have folded since we used them.

  • It seems quite a lot to me, I had my bathroom finished this week and I paid £3550 for the same amount of work including u/f heating, same size bathroom. I supplied sanitary fittings and tiles. But I did have quotes siilar to yours.

If I were quoting for all that in the NW it would be about £4200-£4500 depending on just how much replumbing was required. However, I would advise that you 'tank' the shower area to a minimum height of 1m(additional cost approx £100). If you went for a wet room option I would be looking at increasing the quote by £500-£1000. Again it is hard to say exactly even if you see the room as it depends on many factors such as ease of accessibility to existing pipes, difficulty rerouting pipes and waste, building the wall in blockwork or stud wall etc.
Therefore his quote sounds reasonable to me.
  • Seems quite high. Just had my bathroom supplied and fitted including tiles and tiling (tiled walls and floor throughout) for £3100. Your room is a bit bigger, has a shower enclosure and plastering work which I didnt have but it still seems quite a big difference. Where in the country are you based?

Thank you for all your comments.
We are in Thanet, which is quite a poor area of the south east
We are getting another quote to see
Any other comments welcome - especially on the quality of the fittings. I will report back on the next quote

Good evening:speaking as someone who has lived in Thanet for most of my years in the UK, labour will be marginally less for qualified/experienced tradespersons than other parts of the southeast but material costs will be the same...beware of the cowboys.

Have you considered sourcing the sanitaryware etc. yourself? I can recommend Allbits in Whitstable...excellent showroom and they have an online shop.

Get another couple of quotes from plumbers recommended to you by a source you trust or try the CIPHE. Perhaps these guides from the BMA would give a bit more technical advice.

Let us know how you get on.

Canucklehead - Thank you for this - I will take a trip to Whitstable at the weekend - i've seen them advertised :-)

Bathrooms seem to be even more complicated than kitchens to choose and buy!

Getting another quote from a plumber who is doing work for a friend (friend hopes he will therefore make a brilliant job of hers if he wants more work!!)

I have not progressed with this at all due to a family bereavement. I did get 2 more quotes - both significantly higher!! Am about to start looking again.

  • Looks about right to me. Please be cautious about going with the cheapest quote. I'm an independent bathroom fitter in the Nottingham area and am rarely the cheapest - normally mid range. Stating the obvious, it's about service and quality, not just price. I have done a fair amount of rectification work for one of the large bathroom showrooms and never fail to be amazed at the bodges I uncover.

Please, please, make sure you follow up references before spending several thousand pounds.
