travel agent in my case america is a big place it is reasonably cheap to new york £230 ish but LA is twice the distance so it goes up a bit you need to know where your going.

try the flight search on kelkoo etc it also depends on the date of travel, if it is a popular time then it will be busy and flights full and expensive if it isnt popular then it will be cheaper.

booking in advanced also saves money as you get the propular times at the lower price bands as the plane has not yet filled up.

Also being based in Scotland you need to take in flight transfers not all places can be got to direct from all airports you may need to fly to london or amsterdam to get cheaper flights

British Airways and American Airlines both currently have offers on their websites for pre Christmas then January to 28 March 2007. Including connecting flights from Glasgow or Edinburgh to London its possible to get a flight to California for under £400 just now.

The American Airlines offers are on www.americanairlines.co.uk. Although they only show London/Manchester departures, if you put in GLA or EDI as the starting point the site will give prices including the connecting flights.
