Car i bought is rubbish.....

I bought a car on the 29th of December, and ive had nothing but problems, needed a new exhaust although i thought it may be needed anyway when i bought it.
Then the struts are leaking oil, and will be about £150 to replace. Also relised that it must have been involved in a crash of some type as the driver door doesn't fit completely, there for condensation gets in all time, so i have to have a towel on the back seat to clean windscreen.
And then finialy when i was driving to work today the engine management light came on.
What im i allowed to do if anything?
It was a garage i bought it from, it was only 1k which i know isnt alot but you dont expect all these problems, especially so soon. I would be happy to get my grand taken of another car they have in stock and pay the difference for a better one. Is that likely to happen?
He is a dealer but out of a big warehouse, he has a sign and cards ect. So im guessing hes a registered dealer. Rushed into buying a car because i need it for my new job. Stupid mistake.
Anyway, any help would be great! thanks!

Oh its the shock absorbers and mounts, not the struts0

year, mileage, make and model?0

Was the car sold with any kind of warranty at all? Secondhand cars are such a liability, this one sounds especially crappy. Sorry to hear it.0

It was 2000, 66,000 miles, Peugeot 206, and i was under the impression all cars from dealers have to be sold with some kind of warranty0

Im sure you could take it back. Try and check the cars history. If it is a cat d or cat c write off then if the dealer has failed to mention this im sure you have a pretty good case of mis-selling. 1k sounds very cheap for only 66k miles though, i suppose you should have taken someone with you who could have given the car a once over before you purchased. Normally cat d write offs aren't a problem so long as you know where its been damaged and that its been rectified properly but in your case this doesnt sound like it.
Take it back to the dealer along with evidence of the cars history, im sure other posters on here will let you know the best places to check historyEven a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.0 -
It was a grand and 11 years old! You paid banger money and got a banger. Unless there are dangerous faults ie road worthiness issues then you have little come back. If you're lucky the seller might take it back and give you your money back. Did you have any kind of inspection of the car before you bought it? Was there a check of any kind by the garage owner mentioning the specific items. Did you ask whether there were any leaks from the suspension? Sellers don't have to volunteer information so unless you ask and make a note of what was said you can expect to get a car that is pretty poor but for a grand that's what you get.0

based on the age and cost, there isn't really ought you can do. The sale of goods act basically says that you get what you pay for.0

Well i asked him if there was any problems with the car and he said no. Had a look round, i know alot about motorbikes not so much with cars so all i really noticed was a hole in the exhuast. When my mechanic rang me he said it was un roadworthy because of the shock absorbers and mounts, and also because the drivers seat belt doesent feed its self back in at all, and apprently that makes it un roadworthy. And then now with this light coming on i just cant be bothered.
I would like just my money back, i dont care the fact i have fixed the exhuast, if i get my 1k back ill be happy.
Anoying this is i had no money at the time, now i have a good job i cant afford abit better car, got my eye on a fiat punto grande thats really nice, but need to sort this car out first!0 -
See if your mechanic will give you a written report stating that in their opinion the car is unroadworthy.
If they do this, you should then go back to the garage you bought it from and ask for a refund, which if they refuse to give, inform them that you will then have to take it up with Trading standards as it is illegal to sell an unroadworthy vehicle unless you were made aware of this.

SALE & SUPPLY OF ‘UNROADWORTHY’ VEHICLES
GUIDANCE NOTESWhat does the law say?[FONT=Arial,Arial][FONT=Arial,Arial]Section 75 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 makes it an offence to sell, supply or offer to sell or supply, or expose for sale an unroadworthy vehicle. It is also an offence to repair/service a vehicle and leave it in an unroadworthy state.

I'm pretty sure inertia seat belts are not an MOT requirement so that wouldn't make it unroadworthy.0
