TJ Hughes

On Wednesday I saw a chair I liked in TJ Hughes, priced at £129.99.
I went back the next day with the money to buy it and was more than happy to see advertising on the shop windows that there was "20% 0ff absolutely everything".
Great, I thought. That'll make it a bit cheaper.
Wrong. TJs had upped the price to £149.99. So the 20% discount was well covered.
Needless to say I didn't buy the chair. But if this is standard practise with TJs people need to be aware they're not REALLY getting a discount at all when the price is raised to make sure the store isn't losing out.
I won't be shopping there again.

Oh yeah, completely typical big retailer practice.
Eg - for DFS to claim 50% off...they have to have been selling [or rather trying to sell] the same sofa for 28 days [iirc] in ONE of it's stores. So the prices quoted are completely meaningless [imo].Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why then you're as thick and stupid as the moderators on here - MSE ForumTeam0 -
typical, it's not only TJ's but I've seen the
same thing done at Curry's :mad:Sealed Pot Number 018 🎄2009..£950.50 🎄2010..£256 🎄 2011..£526 🎄2012..£548.80 🎄2013...£758.88🎄2014...£510 🎄2015...£604.78 🎄2016...£704.50 🎄2017...£475 🎄2018...£1979.12 🎄2019...£408.88🎄2020...£1200.63...🎄2021…£588 🎄2022 £672… 🎄2023 £3,783.90 🎄2024…£3,882.57🎄20250 -
So annoying though isn't it? Easy to fall for the very misleading 20% discount offer. It would almost seem illegal to me.0

So 20% off the new price of £149.99 would have brought it down to £119.99ish, about £10 less than you were originally willing to pay.....
But you didn't buy it?

It sounds like someone at TJHughes went to the Tesco School of Marketing!0

When a store starts a "sale" but puts all it's prices up first...it's a p**s take, but that's how they keep in business I suppose.
I must say though that whenever I've gone in my local TJ Hughes I've managed to get some lovely bargains. Just yesterday my Mother got a gorgeous bedding set for under £20.This post was brought to you from the vortex of a human psyche, it was approved by my poor judgement. :T0 -
The alarm bells should have rung when you saw the poster. In small print at the bottom, it says 'Exclusions, terms and conditions apply' ; so it's not 20% off absolutely everything.
Why do stores like TJ Hughes have so little respect for their customers that they think they will be fooled.0 -

Because they can be. Very easily.
Last week on the 'Mary Portas: Secret Shopper' programme she persuaded one furniture chain to get rid of all their tacky marketing for the new year sales weekend.
On the whole it worked very well for the retailer but they interviewed some customers and a couple of the comments were:
"It's new year so they really should have a sale".
and
"There's no sale on so I'm going to get myself across to DFS"

Some people really do deserve all they get! There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

Agree with this. The big store chains aren't fools. If people didn't keep falling for these gimmicks then they wouldn't use them.0
